clean living / natural cleaning products

i want to keep it natural. for the average person, making their own laundry detergent isn't super practical. i love that people do it, and for me it would be a fun project [like the "make your own carpet fresher"], but i can't see myself always making everything all the time. so i rely on amazing brands with sustainable products. and i enjoy researching a tad to make sure the companies i buy from mean well. there are too many chemicals out there, and not only is it bad for your little one, but its bad for you.. to be constantly breathing in and touching these cleaning chemicals. i switched over to all natural products over a year ago. and now i walk down the cleaning isle at the store and actually smell the chemicals from products. it mostly makes me sick, but also sad because people think they need harsh chemicals to clean. here are some of my favorites a little bit behind each brand.

[mrs. meyer's] probably my all time favorite cleaning product ever. somehow mrs. meyer's makes cleaning fun. great smells and packaging (which means reusable bottles). love the lavender laundry products, my clothes have never smelled better. i also use their chemical free lemon verbena toilet bowl cleaner. and lately i'm obsessed with the radish scent and love it for my all purpose countertop spray. as far as counter spray, i like to change up the mrs. meyer's scents.. but radish has to be my favorite. its so unique smelling!
about mrs. meyer's products: "we make intelligent, responsible raw material choices, and whenever possible, obtain materials from renewable plant resources such as coconut, palm, corn, soy or olive. at times we choose to use non-plant-derived material for reasons of efficacy, consistency and safety. our products do not contain chlorine bleach, ammonia, petroleum distillates, parabens, phosphates or phthalates. we use concentrated, biodegradable formulas and at least 25% post-consumer plastic in our bottles. we do not test on animals. learn more in our [ingredient glossary]"

[seventh generation] i'm so happy that seventh generation has expanded and produces a variety of products. in addition to the cleaning products listed below, i love their other products as well such as their [diapers & wipes]. when we aren't cloth diapering, you bet we've got a seventh generation diaper on. chemical free, baby!
about seventh generation: "our commitment to you is that we will be completely transparent in the disclosure of the ingredients in all of our products, and will provide you with as much information as possible to give you the highest confidence that you are making a conscious, informed choice when you choose seventh generation products for your home. [ingredient disclosure]"

[earth friendly products] i posted a few days ago about [making your own popsicles] and talked about cleaning my fruit and veggies with this awesome spray. can be found in most grocery stores.
about earth friendly products: "we pledge that our products are environmentally responsible, work well and provide value. we will never test on animals or use animal ingredients. we will conduct business in a socially responsible manner that safeguards the earth."

[method] with such memorable packaging and fun bright colored bottles, who wouldn't enjoy cleaning with these products. i particularly love their floor cleaner. when i don't have time to mop, i use a swifter and their floor cleaner. its so easy, you squirt on the floor and wipe away. i use the hard wood floor cleaner around lincolns high chair on a daily basis. the wood floor cleaner is almond scented. so if you want to breathe heaven.. you should clean your wood floors with this bad boy. in addition to the floor cleaner i love their window cleaner. it gets the job done without burning your nose like other window cleaners.. it actually has a nice mint scent. love it!
i need to get my hands on their new [granite counter polish]
and for daddy's new grill i need to snag some [stainless steel polish]
about method products: "when it comes down to it, we’re here to make products that work, for you and for the planet, ones that are as easy on the eyes as they are on the nose. it’s a tall order but we wouldn’t want to do anything else."

if you want an all in one everything.. you need to check out this company. it might sound a little weird at first, but this soap (that i use on my body daily) is also a great cleaning product. how is this possible? simplicity. they use simple ingredients that do nothing other than clean. no unnecessary additives. personally i use different scents for different things. i especially love the lavender for my shower. and, as i mentioned above.. i have a love for almond oil.. it has such a strong and beautiful natural smell. i use almond for floors and put some on a rag to clean the floor molding. i use the sal liquid suds for any deep cleaning.. scrubbing the counters really good or doing a thorough mopping around the house. [dr. bronner's dilutions for cleaning]
about method products: "the meaning of 'all-one!' the 30,000+ words spread across our soap labels represent dr. bronner’s life’s work of searching every religion and philosophy for 'full truths,' which can be summed up in two sentences:
  1. “we are all brothers and sisters, and we should take care of each other and spaceship earth!”
  2. “constructive capitalism is where you share the profits with the workers and the Earth from which you made it!”
This core philosophy continues to guide our business practices today.  We see our company as a means to create resources to help build a better world for everyone.

if you need strong cleaning, you don't need chemicals. this product can be used on anything. it works so amazing for having such little ingredients. this company does it all. their bottles are made from 100% post consumer recycled materials. they have had the same product for 120 years. never a chemical involved in the process. when i need a deep clean on my stove, sink, bathroom sink, tub.. this product never fails.
about bon ami: "simple ingredients have been the base of our cleaning powder since it was first created in 1886. why ruin a great thing?" [read more about their heart warming company story]

if you can't get enough natural cleaning products... here's a recipe to make your own carpet freshener:

super simple carpet freshener:
1/2 cup baking soda
5-10 drops lavender essential oil

shake ingredients up and sprinkle all over a carpet or rug. wait about 20-40 minutes and vacuum it up. i'm not sure how baking soda is so magical, but i know it helps whiten clothes. and it also brighten dull rugs. i'm hooked on it!

we have a stinky dog. and after a while the rug kind of smells like him. and we love him.. but not his doggy smell so much. this definitely helps with odor and obviously its really easy to vacuum up.
[side note: works great in stinky cars also]

  1. I agree it’s not that difficult to make our own cleaning products at home. I feel everybody should try making these cleaning products at home. I also prepare them at my home, and first time my house cleaners helped me to make and it was a great success in very small budget.
