nursery ideas for a shared room
the plan is to share our bedroom with baby #2 until he sleeps well enough to share a room with his brother. we have a dedicated "corner" of our room for baby #2. living in the city means our bedroom is already pretty small. but we measured out enough space and can fit a mini crib.. tight squeeze but it will do. i've been nesting like a wild woman, and even though he doesn't have a full nursery, i still want to get excited about decorating something ! i made him this [moon phase mobile] for his space, and here are a few other things that would look cute in his "corner". i kept in mind there is not much floor space.. so sticking to walls, some plush & blankets inside the crib, and maybe a small basket to go under the crib.
1. [bryn mountain display shelf - UO]
2. [roxy marj - heirloom bear blanket]
3. [land of nod - with a chance pillow]
4. [lunar new year "a dream of reality" painting]
5. [momo- "bananas" print]
6. [colette bream - little house pillow]
7. [crane floor lamp - cb2]
8. [babyletto mini crib]
9. [land of nod - knit storage bin]

diy / moon phases mobile
i still have about two months to go, and i'm in full blown nesting mode. i just can't stop!
some moon terminology:
(in order) waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent
waxing = growing
waning = shrinking
gibbous = more than half
crescent = less than half
side note: i always start my material list thinking i know what i'm doing, (so i take a photo of the supplies i "think" i'm going to use) and then most of the time i find an easier/better solution along the way and change up some materials. for this one, i thought i was going to sew little moon pillows, but the sizing and fabric were off. so i changed it up a bit. i also love to use what i already have, and i had brown cardstock paper, not black. (you should use black)
this is a different kind of "baby mobile" and will hang vertically when finished. great for skinny places, like our bedroom that will soon be half nursery. see our [shared space here].. crib is coming soon, we are super excited :)
materials:
- gold hoop ring, (size it to your moons, it will end up being the "new moon")
- cardstock / thick paper / cardboard (backing of moons)
- decorative string
- embroidery needle
- black fabric
- white fabric paint
- brush
- ruler, pencil, scissors, chalk
- fabric or craft glue
- gemstone / rock / crystal (bottom weight)
1. splatter paint your black fabric with white paint, to create a "starry" look. (let dry) 2. draw out your moons, see above for phases. using the hoop, create your 7 cut outs. 3. using chalk, trace your moons on your fabric, glue to cardstock, and cut out. 4. tie your string to your hoop, this is where it will hang from. using a needle, thread your moons on the string, evenly spaced out. 5. tie / glue / wrap your rock with string and hang from the bottom.

cribs / sharing a room with baby
making room for another person in your family can be super exciting.. but living in the city has its limitations on space. we are lucky enough to have a three bedroom apartment. but unlucky in the sense that our family is far far away. so it is important to us to keep a comfortable space for our out of town family.
it will be easier, since we will have two boys, to have them share a room down the road. but for now, probably for the first year until they are both sleeping better, we moved some furniture around in our room and we are creating a little corner for our baby boy #2. we are going to keep it simple since our bedroom is tiny. (so tiny, we only have one night stand) but down the road if we live here or a different house, the boys will help us design an awesome room to co-habitat together. check out lincoln's room [here], although we have updated it again, with a big boy toddler bed. new post coming soon...
currently we share our room with the dog, and lincoln usually around 2am he comes wandering in for snuggles. so welcoming another small body isn't going to make much a difference in this little room.

diy / growth chart ruler
since there is another growing baby on the way, i thought it would be fun to make a growth chart to compare the boys height and keep track of the growth spurts. this project was very affordable, and didn't take too much time to make, other than waiting for the stain and sealant to dry.
materials:
- pine wood (6'l x 1'w x 1"d)
- stain - many different options, i chose 'golden oak' & a paintbrush or rag
- polycrylic protective finish (comes in spray or can)
- ruler, measuring tape or right angle ruler
- sandpaper, fine or medium. (i used 150 grit)
- pencil & pen
- paint pen (or acrylic paint and paint brush)
- print out numbers 1-6; 200pt (bookman old style is the font i used)
1. sand your piece of wood for any splinters, and smooth the edges.
2. stain the wood, paint a thin layer, let dry for an hour and add a second coat if needed. wait a few more hours before handling. you want to make sure its dry.
3. i started my ruler at 6 inches (so when i hang it, it will be 6 inches off the floor.) my ruler is 6 inches - 6 feet 6 inches. mark your ruler lines with pencil first then use the paint marker. it helps for me visually to look at another ruler. but you want your lines to be 2 inches long for your half foot and foot marks, 1.5 inches for quarter marks, and 1 inch for the rest of the marks.
4. your numbers will go before the foot line marker. not under or after it. to make your number as perfect as possible, take your print out, and scribble the back of the number in pencil. flip it over, put it in position, and use a pen to draw on top the outline of your number. the pencil will act as a transfer. color in your number carefully with your paint pen.
5. seal this baby up. take your polycrylic protective finish and give it a good spray. let it dry for a few hours (at least one hour). if you use a spray can, sometimes the finish can be a little scratchy once dry. take a rag and pretend it's sandpaper, give it a good scrub and this will smooth it out.
6. i bought some extreme mounting tape. its double sided and will hold 20lbs (this might be 5lbs) i put a strip on the top and bottom. measured 6 inches off the ground and stuck it to the wall. this will give it a clean look and keep it flat against the wall. other hanging solutions include screwing it in, or using a saw tooth hanger.

diy / nesting for baby
nesting is something that happens naturally. while pregnant you just want to make the most comfortable perfect space for your little one. I took on one project that has taken almost my entire pregnancy... knitting a blanket. I have only knitted a scarf or two before this project. so I was not very prepared for the time it was going to take. or the fact that it was the middle of summer and here I was with wool yarn sweating away. anyways, my two projects are complete and i'm patiently awaiting my baby boy!
